Perhaps not, but in this case they were being used to illustrate the idea that believers are soldiers for Christ. (II Tim. 2:3-4) No soldier is complete without a weapon. Tactical firearms are simply the modern version of the sword, to which the Bible is compared. (Heb 4:12) No, we are not teaching that Christians are to run around shooting people. This was a simple illustration of the fact that God compares the Bible to a lethal weapon (the sword) the purpose of which is to reveal the "thoughts and intents of the heart."

I was aware of your web site and your views before you posted this comment. I am also aware of various stories of abusive parents who complain, “Mike Pearl made me do it.” Their sin and their lack of responsibility does not in any way undermine the legitimacy of No Greater Joy’s position on child training. To twist and misuse good teaching is the fault of the hearer, not the teacher.

I have lived in Ukraine for 9 years. I read, write, and speak the language fluently. I know personally many Ukrainians who are using techniques they've learned from No Greater Joy, and to great effect. Their children are happy, well behaved and the envy of the other parents around them.

I have known Michael Pearl personally since I was 12 years old. I know every one of his married children personally. None of them are abused, and none of Mike's teachings promote abuse of any kind. Again, anyone may pervert what Mike says and then use him as a scapegoat upon which to blame their own abusive behavior, but that is possible with any teacher.

Much is said about the fact that the Pearls endorse the use of the rod in child training. This is not only legal but biblical. The use of the rod, though essential, is actually only a small part of the overall training of a child. And I would add that if you reject the Pearls because you disagree with the concept of spanking children, you are not opposing the Pearls but the Bible. Scripture teaches very clearly that the rod is be used to chasten a child: not to beat him into submission, as some claim, but to teach wisdom. This is not an original idea from Michael and Debi Pearl. This is God's plan laid out clearly in the Bible.

I support the Pearls fully, not because I like their style per se, and not because they have supported me financially as you imply in another of your comments, but because they are loyal to the Scriptures. I offer my voice in chorus with thousands of others in saying that I praise God for the Pearls and for their stand for Biblical child training.

Though, I understand that it may be hard to reconsider that support of their teachings, as NGJ ministries provides generous financial support for your mission work in Ukraine.

Still, please. . . prayerfully. . . consider. . .

We have also lived and worked in Ukraine. I strongly urge you to NOT utilize the family materials from No Greater Joy in Ukraine. To do so would be foolhardy and inviting abuse. Please, prayerfully consider this request and do your research.

I suggest starting here:

May God bless you and your family, and give you grace and wisdom.
