Yura and his two sons, Matviy (left) and Marko (right) visited our home on February 24, 2022 — the first day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The visit had been planned days earlier, and we decided to go ahead with it. We shared a meal, played games, swapped stories, and enjoyed fellowship despite the onset of war.

Joshua Steele · October 12, 2022

Today we’re excited to bring you another episode from our Voices from Ukraine series. In this episode, Yura Petriv shares his personal experiences at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, his humanitarian work in support of Ukrainian soldiers, and his perspective on the current state of the war. We’ll also provide updates in some other areas including our family’s status in Slovakia, the Good and Evil book ministry in Ukraine, and Russia’s deadly missile attacks of October 10.

We don’t get to see sights like this every day, but wow, it’s fun when it happens. Ukrainian kids, Ukrainian-language Good and Evil books. The Gospel is going out!

Joshua Steele · September 15, 2022

Yes, it’s been a while, but today we’re back with lots to report! In this episode, we’ll tell you about our recent music outreach during which we presented the Gospel to around 100 Ukrainian children. The new printing of Good and Evil in Ukrainian will be here soon! This special edition includes all the standard body content which makes Good and Evil awesome, but the book now features a patriotic cover design as well as a new foreword dedicated to the Ukrainians’ struggle for freedom.

We’ll also bring you up to date on our family news, the Good and Evil project, and our Bible First ministry.

David, Mia, and Kathryn enjoy romping through the medieval gardens of the Castle of Spirits (Bojnice Castle) during our recent family trip.

Moving Again!

Joshua Steele · June 27, 2022

Our family is moving to a house! The small apartment that has been our home for the past three months has been a God-send, but now it’s time for a bit more space. Additionally, we would like to bring you some new updates on the Good and Evil project, our other ETO team members, the Bible First program, and our recent family ministry trip to Bratislava.

The phrase “I love you” in Ukrainian can be difficult for westerners to pronounce: Я люблю вас (Ya lyublyu vas) In an attempt to aid the linguistically challenged, a funny but phonetically similar phrase has been proposed: “Yellow blue bus”. And now, maybe for the first time ever, we have a picture to match! 🥰

Yellow Blue Bus

Joshua Steele · June 11, 2022

Nearly four months ago, our family evacuated from Ukraine. At the time, we took with us only the belongings we could carry in a few suitcases and our old yellow van. And while the time of our return has not yet come — though we believe it will — we find ourselves amazed as we reflect on the goodness and provision of God.

In each episode of the series, we’ll be interviewing people in-country who are serving the Lord and striving to support the Ukrainian people in their struggle for freedom. In today’s episode, we’re excited to bring you the story of Serhii and Natallia Chepara. You’ll hear Serhii share his experiences in his native Ukrainian language, with Kelsie translating into English. Natallia will talk about their long weeks of separation as she and the children evacuated to Germany and adapted to refugee life. Finally, you’ll hear the heart-warming conclusion as their family is reunited in a small Carpathian village. This is an episode you won’t want to miss!
